Working for Ware
Here you can find everything you need to know about the council, as well as the services and events we provide for residents of, and visitors to, our community.
Councillor Alexander Curtis was elected Mayor of Ware for the 2020/2021 civic year on the 11th May 2020. Councillor Ian Kemp is the Deputy Mayor.
Alex has represented Chadwell ward on Ware Town Council since 2019, having previously represented Christchurch ward from 2015 to 2019. He has served as Leader of the Council and twice as Deputy Mayor of Ware. Between 2017 and 2018, he served his first term as mayor at the age of 20; the youngest in the UK at the time and the youngest in Ware’s history.
Alex also serves on East Herts District Council and the Hertfordshire Police and Crime Panel, is Chairman of the Hertford and Stortford Conservative Association and a member of the National Conservative Convention. He is a trustee of the Guideposts Trust, an emotional well-being charity with an office in Ware that works with vulnerable adults.
Alex read Geography as an undergraduate at St. Catherine’s College Oxford, from which he was awarded a first-class honours degree. His research has been recognised by the Quaternary Research Association and the Royal Geographical Society. Currently, Alex is reading for a masters in Geoscience at University College London.
In his professional life, Alex has worked for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), including at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Within the UN system, he principally worked on urbanisation policy within Africa; including with regard to the implementation of the global-level New Urban Agenda on the continent. Alex has also provided support to the work of the High Level Panel on Migration in Africa, and has participated in the work of the African Union Commission.
In his limited free time, Alex enjoys listening to music, reading and walking. Though he is interested in all manner of causes of relevance to the area; the conservation of built and natural heritage, the enactment of local economic development initiatives, the enhancement of opportunities for the vulnerable members of our community are all of particular concern to him as a local councillor.
The role of Mayor is principally a symbolic one, with the role being held for 12 months, and elected by the full town council.
