Honoring May Savidge with new information board
A new board shining light on historic Ware resident May Savidge has been installed in Baldock Street by The Ware Society with the help of Ware Town Council. The board displays a visual timeline of the historic Hall-House, built in the 14th or early 15th century, which Miss Savidge fought to save after plans were made to demolish it in order to build the roundabout which stands in its place today.
Being an experienced engineering draughtswoman, May Savidge possessed the skills to dismantle and reassemble the huge house. She meticulously documented and numbered each and every timber, and moved the entire house to Wells-next-the-Sea, where it stands to this day. She sadly died before the work to reconstruct it could be completed, but the rest was carried out over ten years by her niece, Christine Adams.
The house can now be visited by appointment and stands as a testament to the hard work of two women who believed in the importance of preserving historic buildings for future generations.
