Mayor of Ware Profile
Cllr Butcher moved to Ware with his parents as a baby and grew up in the town. After some time away, he moved back with his family 17 years ago, as he and his wife Sandy considered Ware was an excellent place to raise their two sons. He has always been passionate about working in the community and on green issues. He has volunteered with local groups including the Wombles of Wareabouts and Southern Maltings. He co-founded and is Chair of Ware-based Herts Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Support Network, for people and families living with FASD. He was co-founder and Chair of the Burning Issue Group which successfully fought Biffa’s proposal to build a giant waste incinerator at the landfill on the other side of the A10 from the Vicarage estate. He has worked in charities for his entire career which took him, for a time, to Brussels and to Washington DC. He currently works for Oxfam on mitigating the effects of conflict on civilians. On the Council, he most enjoys helping people in the local community to resolve problems or to achieve goals. As well as being Mayor, he serves as Deputy Leader of the town council.
The Mayor’s chosen charity for the year is Herts Inclusive Theatre.
