New Skatepark Opens in Ware
Skateboarders, BMX, and scooter riders of Ware are off to a flying start in 2022 with a new skatepark opening in the town.
The project saw the removal of old wooden ramps to make way for the creation of a bespoke concrete skatepark. It has been designed for existing riders and people keen to try the sport, with features suitable for all ages and abilities.
Mayor of Ware, Councillor Ian Kemp was joined by the construction team, children from Sacred Heart Primary School and youth group members who were the first to test the new ramps.
The Mayor commented,
“I’m delighted to see the rapid progress that has been made on our new skatepark. A splendid job has been done by Sean Higgins at the town council, by Betongpark, and all the skatepark users, who worked together to create this exciting facility for Ware and the surrounding area. I’m sure it will be greatly enjoyed!”
The renowned street artist, Charles Uzzell Edwards, better known as Pure Evil also came along to the first day of opening to lend his support. He created and gifted a custom ‘Skate Ware’ design which has been reproduced on t-shirts. All proceeds will go to Ware youth charities and groups when the t-shirts become publicly available for sale.
Ware Town Council had allocated an amount for the scheme last year but successfully secured an additional sum from section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, with the support of East Herts District Council. This funding is for projects that deliver social and community benefits and are well managed and sustainable.
The park was built by Betongpark, a company with deep roots in the skateboarding community. They collaborated with the council, members of the public who attended the consultation events and user groups like Youth Herts, Active Herts, Ware Street Crew and the East Herts Youth Strategy Group. Input from experts in the field like ABC Skating, XLR8 Bike School and Highway Cycles means the park is suitable for everyone.
An ‘official’ launch event with exciting activities, workshops and giveaways is planned for the Easter school holidays when the weather is a little kinder to outdoor activities. However, the facility is now open to the public for those itching to give their skateboard, BMX or scooter a dust-off!
