Ware Lido Announces Ambitious Refurbishment Plans

Temporary closure for the 2022 season

Ware Town Council has agreed to ambitious plans to refurbish its Lido. However, this will mean that the facility will not be opening for the 2022 season due to essential repairs and to allow time for other improvements to be made. Councillors and staff recognise that many will be saddened by the temporary closure of the popular leisure venue. Multiple options were considered to enable the 2022 season to end before the repairs were undertaken, but unfortunately none were viable. The required work is estimated to cost several hundred thousand pounds.

Built in 1934, the Lido is situated in the grounds of Ware Priory and includes a 30-metre long main pool and a separate teaching pool. During the 2021 swim season, it became apparent that there was an issue with water loss from both pools. An engineer’s survey found a serious failure in the underground pipework meaning that the teaching pool had to close immediately. After the season finished in September, both pools were drained and further survey work took place.

Much of the pipework for both pools will need to be replaced and the teaching pool was found to have structural defects which will require it to be rebuilt.

The difficult decision was taken by the town council and its Councillors that the required level of renovation could only be achieved by closing to the public for 2022.

In addition to the pool repairs, the town council will be taking the opportunity to improve on other aspects of the Lido. Last year, they surveyed users of the pool and requests included new seating, poolside shaded areas and improved changing room floors and showers. The plan is to secure new funding that will allow even more ambitious and extensive improvements and features.

Ware Town Council will be working with Lido users, groups like the Friends of Ware Lido (FOWL) and the wider community to share ideas and gain feedback on proposals that will shape the future of the Lido.

The term ‘Lido’ originates from the Italian word for shore or bank. The Ware Lido is now 88 years old and was built for the sum of £4132, it still retains its original charm and layout. Alterations were made in 2016 thanks to donated funds from GlaxoSmithKline including improvements to the building, changing rooms and the pool surround. In addition to swim sessions, the Lido also offers private hire for swim clubs, schools, community groups, function and parties.

Terry Philpott, Town Clerk of Ware Town Council said,

“We are saddened at this outcome, but the repairs are crucial.  On a positive note, the closure period will provide us an opportunity to make this community asset even better than before and ensure it is available for future generations. We hope more people will go on to discover the benefits of Ware Lido, a wonderful open-air environment for swimming.”
